Why do you eat poison every single day?

You salt your food without a second thought. But look at its two ingredients on their own.

Sodium is a silvery metal so reactive that if you drop a piece into water, it sputters, jumps, and can burst into flame. Chlorine is a greenish gas so toxic it was used as a chemical weapon in World War I: a few breaths are enough to kill.

An explosive metal and a poisonous gas. And yet, when they come together…

They form sodium chloride — NaCl, table salt — something that isn’t just harmless but that your body needs to live: your nerves and muscles don’t work without it.

How? In the ionic bond, sodium hands one electron over to chlorine. That single transfer turns two dangerous atoms into stable, tame ions. The head-turning lesson: the properties of a compound are not the sum of its parts. The whole is something else entirely.
