How many people does it take for two to share a birthday?
You’re in a room with 23 people. How likely is it that two of them share a birthday? Intuition shouts “almost impossible, there are 365 days.” Intuition is badly wrong: the probability is more than 50%.
How? The trick is that you’re not looking for someone who matches you. You’re looking for any two to match. And the number of possible pairs grows shockingly fast: among 23 people there are 253 different pairs to compare. With that many chances, a match stops being rare.
Bump it to 70 people and the probability climbs to 99.9%: practically certain.
The abyss isn’t the birthday: it’s that your brain is wired to ask “does it match me?” when the world almost always asks “does any pair match?” That’s why coincidences — in life, in data — feel magical when they’re often pure statistics.
You don’t need 365 people, just 23. Coincidences are far more common than your intuition will let you believe.
